Allergy testing is something that is gaining in popularity as more patients realize the benefits of finding out what could be causing health problems and then working to remove that allergen from their daily existence. Imagine if one particular food, like corn, was causing all types of stomach problems and even leading to constant sinus infections.
Now imagine if that item could be removed from life and those illnesses went for good. This is the power of an allergy test. It takes the unknown and makes it known while placing a patient in control of their health.
Patients who visit our clinic complaining of constant sneezing, sinus problems, stomach issues or generally being unwell, can benefit from an allergy test. This is one of the first things that we will ask about. If someone is constantly sick but has no idea why then an allergy test is a great place to begin searching for the root cause.
Instead of ordering expensive tests and imaging, we often start with an allergy test. In many cases, it is something incredibly simple like eating a particular type of food that is causing so much pain and discomfort. An allergy test is a much cheaper way to identify the problem and the best way to identify the problem when an allergy is causing health complications.
We can complete an allergy test either through a blood test or by testing the skin. As a primary care physician, we can complete this test and typically recommend a skin test rather than blood work. The skin test is less expensive and the results tend to be more accurate. There are several types of skin tests that we can complete when checking for allergies and they include:
A skin prick is one of the most common types of allergy tests. We place various allergens on the skin before pricking it. If the area is red or swollen after 15 to 20 minutes, then it indicates an allergy.
We can inject allergens into the skin to see if the skin reacts to it. If the skin reacts to the allergens, then that indicates an allergy.
We can place allergens on the skin using a patch of tape. We do this for hard-to-detect allergies and they typically show up 72 hours later.
Allergy tests are typically very safe. While the skin is going to be irritated where there is an allergy, it should not cause any complications beyond that. In only rare occasions will anyone suffer a more life-threatening allergic reaction.
Though it is very rare, this is why it is important to have allergy test completed with the assistance of a physician who can then respond by offering emergency care if needed.
Find out if you are allergic to anything and see how much better your life can be by eliminating it. All you need to do is schedule an appointment for an allergy test.
